Design Process

FB_Football

FB_Football was a map created for the mod Half Life 2: Capture the Flag. Although the map began as a lighting test, it gained enough of a following to allow 6 versions before being re-designed and released as an official map (FB_MesaField).

The biggest challenge while designing the map was to remove the basic 'Killbox' mentality from the gameplay. The original intention was to create a series of 'control objectives', term used loosely, through the means of various powerful weapons and roles.

I started out creating a basic football field with various weapon drops based on 'roles'. Shotguns and SMG's for high-intensity gameplay in the center of the field. The backline and defenders were crossbows and magnums for high damage, low fire rate defense. The video above also contained rocket launchers in the middle of the field, but these were later removed.

I then designed the outside stadium walls and 'seating'. The walls exist to empower explosive weapons and crossbow weapons as well as enforce keeping the 'football' in the field.

Grenades exist on the outer seating for players to collect and fire inward, with rocket launchers at the back sides so players can see the explosive travel toward them.

I finally decided to not include additional ammo for most weapons to enforce aggressive behavior and movement.

The map was later re-designed with the work of the mod team and released as an official map, FB_MesaField.
